- Mikko Rantanen and the Colorado Avalanche host Tage Thompson and the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, December 15, 2022
- Colorado opens up as heavy favorites in the Sabres vs Avalanche odds
- Read below our best NHL betting pick for this Thursday night matchup
On Thursday night, we have a matchup with 2 teams at a very different ends of the spectrum of NHL teams. The Avalanche are Stanley Cup contenders who are incredibly depleted with injuries but are slowly returning to full health. The Sabres, on the outside looking in, for the playoff picture have some bright young stars developing over in Buffalo. Colorado are heavy home favorites in the Sabres vs Avalanche odds on Thursday.
Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, and even Dylan Cozens have taken huge next steps and have been incredible for the Sabres, even if the rest of the team hasn’t been up to snuff.
The last matchup between these two was quite the exciting matchup and I expect the same, even If the Avalanche aren’t 100% for tomorrow’s match. The Avs will still be without Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Josh Manson but I’m expecting this to be a high flying matchup.
Let’s take a look at the Sabres vs Avalanche odds for this Thursday night as we breakdown our best NHL bet.

Buffalo Sabres Betting Outlook
The Buffalo Sabres have been a high flying affair and must watch hockey as of late. Tage Thompson has taken the league by storm and is currently 3rd in the NHL for points and 2nd in the NHL for goals. The Sabres as a whole have scored the most goals in the NHL.
They are averaging 4.5 goals per game in their last 10, the problem is they are also allowing 3.5 in that same time span. The Sabres are allowing 34 shots per game and taking 33.3 in their last 10 games.

The Sabres matches are quite an exciting watch, and their last matchup saw these two teams scoring a total of 10 goals in a 6-4 match that saw the Avalanche take the win in a game that saw a total of 16 power plays in total. Both the Sabres and Avalanche give up a top 12 amount of penalties and both teams have top 5 Power Plays in the NHL, which will typically lead to goals for everyone.
One matchup of note is the Sabres inability to stop right wingers. The Sabres are giving up the 3rd most shots to RWs, by far their worst position. They are also giving up the 11th most shots to Dmen, which makes a lot of the Avalanche stars in fantastic spots.
Colorado Avalanche Betting Outlook
The Colorado Avalanche are in a spot that no Stanley Cup Champion wants to be in, suffering with a down season by their high standards. Many of there downfalls can do with their injuries, and that has absolutely been a difficulty this season. They are still without Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and two of their top 4 defensemen but they are slowly getting healthy.
Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen have come back and they have won their last two games, I like for them to continue to improve and get back on track for another Stanley Cup run.
The Colorado Avalanche have struggled to score as of late, scoring only 2.4 goals in their L10 games and allowing 3.3 in that same time span. With their worrisome defense and their forward core, slowly, coming back to health, I think they should be able to score some goals against the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night. I expect some high flying chances both ways with some incredible spots for multiple Buffalo Sabres as well.
The Colorado Avalanche currently give up the 9th most SOG to C, 6th most to LWs, and 7th most to defensemen leaving a lot of the Sabres stars in great spots to succeed.
Sabres vs Avalanche Prediction and Best Bets
To start, I expect some more fireworks to be exchanged between these two teams. While the Avs aren’t as high flying as they were the last time these two teams met, I still think they have enough talent to score goals, especially on this Sabres team who cant stop anyone. I love the over 6.5 tonight in the Sabres vs Avalanche odds and really think it to be a fantastic line, especially with how many penalties each team takes. The mix of penalties and the prolific power plays has these two teams in a great spot to score some goals, leading me to the over.
On top with the goals, I think the power play points market is fantastic for this Sabres vs Avalanche game. Its something I have never really dabbled in, but I think this matchup is too good to look the other way. We had FIVE Power Play goals between these 2 and with their incredible PPs I think taking their stars for Power Play Points is a great bet. So, as an experiment , I will be putting .25u on every single top PP performer’s line today –
Dahlin (+150) / Tuch (+260) / Thompson (+144) / Cozens (+250) / Makar (+108) / Rantanen (-110) / Nichushkin (+174) – Total investment = 1.75u
Finally, My SGP will consist of a mix of all the plays. I will be playing Rasmus Dahlin Over 2.5 SOG / Tage Thompson Over 3.5 SOG / Cale Makar Over 2.5 SOG / Mikko Rantanen Over 3.5 SOG / Tage Thompson and Cale Makar 1+ Power Play Point (+3300)
