Virginia Online Sports Betting Apps Rated

Which Virginia sportsbooks are the best for you? Of the 14 available, we’ve rated four of the top options to help you determine the best fit!

Sportsbook Features Rating
Caesars Sportsbook Virginia In a fast-paced world that never seems to make time for individuals, Caesars has broken the mold. With its origins as a world-class casino, Caesars knows how to make users feel important, and it does an excellent job drawing and retaining them through a rewards program that has set the gold standard in the sports betting industry. 8/10
BetMGM Virginia Let’s face it. Sportsbooks can only offer so much before they begin to feel boring and blazay. Virginia sports bettors can forget about those feelings when they sign up at BetMGM. Lion’s Boosts and other unique daily promotions keep users consistently engaged, making for a fantastic user experience. 9/10
DraftKings Sportsbook Virginia What do you get when you take the original DFS giant and use it to offer sports gambling? You get DraftKings Sportsbook, one of the most trusted sportsbooks in the sports betting industry and one of the biggest books in Virginia. If we had one complaint about DraftKings, it’s the pedestrian new user offer, but it’s hard to find much to fault with this industry giant. 9/10
BetRivers Sportsbook It’s 2022. Everyone is on their phones, computers, tablets and TVs, often all simultaneously. BetRivers knows that users aren’t satisfied with a typical live betting experience, so they innovated to make it better! Though the layout of the app seems a bit clunky, the live betting experience is top-notch and offers streaming on many live events so you can watch and wager from the comfort of the BetRivers app. 8/10

Virginia Sports Betting Promo Codes & Bonuses

Each of Virginia’s 14 online sportsbooks offers a unique twist on the sports betting experience, but some features and experiences remain uniform across all platforms. Here are some of the most common betting types and offers that Virginia sports bettors can expect when they sign up at a Virginia sports betting app:

  • Straight bet: A straight bet is any wager that’s not a parlay or a proposition. The big three of straight bets are Moneyline, Point Spread and Point Total. Moneyline is the simplest wager, and it requires the bettor to simply pick the winner of the game. A Point Spread wager requires the bettor to wager on the margin of victory or loss between two teams. A Point Total wager is typically called an over/under, and the bettor wagers on if the total score of a game will go over or under the Point Total set by the sportsbook.
  • Parlay: A parlay is any combination of two or more bets combined into a single bet for longer odds and a potentially bigger payday. Every individual bet combined into a parlay is called a leg, and each leg of a parlay must win in order for the parlay to cash. Each leg added to a parlay typically makes the odds longer.
  • Proposition (prop) bet: A prop bet is most typically a wager on a player’s performance, but sometimes props include the outcome of events during a game such as a coin toss, length of time singing the national anthem or color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach during the Super Bowl.
  • Futures bet: A futures bet is a wager placed on the outcome of an event that will not be determined for weeks or months after the wager is placed. Typical futures include betting on division or conference winners, league awards or team win totals.
  • Round robin: A parlay with at least three legs separated into two or more smaller parlays to increase the bettor’s chance of winning. Round robin bets cost more money because the sportsbook creates more wagers from the original parlay. Sportsbooks will break down the cost of round robins, but make sure to pay close attention before hitting submit on any round robin wagers.
  • Teasers: Any parlay that allows the bettor to buy or sell points to make the bet easier to win.
  • Odds boost: Longer odds on a wager without making the wager more difficult to win. Odds boosts are typically offered daily by most sportsbooks for select sports and for tentpole events.
  • New user bonus: New user bonuses are offered to users when they sign up for the first time at a sportsbook. Typical new user bonuses include deposit matches and risk-free first bets.

  3. Enter your address (make sure to leave location tracking on so that in-state eligibility can be verified)

  5. Create a username and strong password
  6. Opt-in to new user offers
  7. Start betting!

Virginia Online Sports Betting Rule

Sports betting rules are standard in Virginia. Users must be physically located within the state and at least 21 years old. Users are not allowed to wager on in-state colleges, and player props for college players are prohibited.

Retail Sports Betting Locations in Virginia

Currently, there are no retail sports betting locations in Virginia, but the sports betting bill that legalized online sports betting allows up to five brick-and-mortar casinos, provided the cities hold a referendum and approve construction.

Four cities have held referenda and approved construction of casinos:

  • Bristol, Hard Rock Casino
  • Danville, Caesars Casino
  • Norfolk, tribal casino owned by the Pamunkey Indians with no partner announced yet
  • Portsmouth, Rush Street Casino

A proposed casino in Richmond did not pass the needed referendum, so we can expect just four retail locations in the Virginia sports betting market for the foreseeable future. The four approved locations listed above could launch as early as 2023, providing additional sports betting outlets for Virginia sports bettors.

Sports Betting History in Virginia

Virginia sports betting was first proposed in a legislative session in 2019, and in March 2020, SB 384 and HB 896 passed the Virginia General Assembly and Senate to legalize sports betting. Governor Ralph Northam amended the bill, and the changes were approved on April 22, 2020, marking the official legalization of sports betting in the Old Dominion State.

Virginia became the second state to launch as an online-only market, with the Tennessee sports betting market being the other. The bill allowed up to five retail locations, and all of Portsmouth, Bristol, Danville and Norfolk voted to allow construction of casinos in their respective cities. Voters in the city of Richmond voted not to allow a casino to be constructed within the city limits.

Can You Bet on College Sports in Virginia?

Virginia sports bettors can wager on college sports, but they cannot wager on in-state schools such as the Virginia Cavaliers, Virginia Tech Hokies, or VCU Rams. Virginia sports bettors cannot wager on player props for college players, regardless of their school. This is the same in New Jersey online sports betting markets.

Is Online Sports Betting Legal in Virginia?

Yes, and this is the only form of legalized sports gambling that has launched so far. Virginia online sports betting markets allow bettors choose from up to 14 different online sportsbooks that have launched. Four retail locations have been approved, so Virginia sports bettors can expect to have that option available as soon as 2023.
