2 NBA Futures to Invest in
My favorite time of year to invest in NBA futures, or really any futures market in any sport is prior to the start of the playoffs. Of course I could have gotten better value on some of the odds-on-favorites prior to the season. But now we have an idea of what the path is for each and every team. Thus giving us a chance to buy a team with an advantageous matchup.
But what I see as the best strategy this year in the NBA is looking for hedge opportunities to maximize your money. As I see there being a few teams that many don’t think have the chance to win it all, but could win a series or two and put us in a good spot to guarantee profit. The Knicks were, unfortunately, able to make the postseason this season, but New York sports bettors will have many different options as they enjoy their first NBA Playoff betting experience.
As always, be sure to shop for the best line possible. I’ll share with you where each of these lines came from.
Dallas Mavericks (+3000 at Caesars)
Look, this isn’t the same Mavericks team from years past. That is largely because of the addition of head coach Jason Kidd, who has worked wonders with the roster this season. For the first time in Luka Doncic’s career as a Mav, Dallas has a top-10 defense in the NBA. The Mavericks are 6th in defensive efficiency this season.
No longer should you expect to see a Luka led team that provides us with a few exciting moments but ultimately bowing out in round 1. The Mavericks have their superstar, which is crucial to a championship team in the NBA, but now there are shot creators around him that better suit his game. The progression of Jalen Brunson in 2022 is exactly what this team has needed and Spencer Dinwiddie has been fantastic since the early season trade.
Dallas finally has home court advantage in their round 1 series, going up against a Jazz team that has been reeling in the last few weeks of the season. Doncic is dealing with a calf strain from the season finale, but with the play-in tournament going on this week he’ll have time to rest. Luka has had the spotlight for a short period in previous playoffs, but this season is his time to assert himself as one of the league’s greats and make a run to the NBA Finals.
Toronto Raptors (+6600 at BetMGM)
+6600, are you kidding me? There is no way you can look at that number and not take it. The Eastern Conference is truly wide open but the investing in the side with the Raptors, Heat and 76ers makes the most sense. Any three of them can come out of that side of the East. The Raptors seem like a no brainer with their defensive pedigree and the playoff experience from the top contributors.
Toronto took the season series with the 76ers 3-1 and although they lack a true big man in the middle they have length all over the floor to defend. They have so many guys that can make life miserable for James Harden. Embiid has been able to score for Philadelphia in the Raptors wins so they can live with it considering their ability to defend the rest of the floor.
Pascal Siakam has had an incredible season but has faltered come playoff time, seeing him play the ladder half of this season has me thinking that all changes. The real difference for this team in a playoff run is Fred VanVleet’s ability to shoot from the perimeter. If he’s not converting open looks then the Raptors don’t have many options on the bench to go to.
If the Raptors get themselves to the Eastern Conference Final you’ll be in an excellent spot to hedge your position. This team is undoubtedly worth a sprinkle.
