The Running Back To Anchor Your OwnersBox Lineup
In order to finish inside the payout zone, you’ll need to find some players that most entrants aren’t looking to select. A great performance from a player that other fantasy owners aren’t putting in their salary cap lineups will have you ascend up the leaderboard at a rapid pace. With that, I have identified a running back that you should anchor your OwnersBox lineups with.
Darrell Henderson (Los Angeles Rams) vs Chicago Bears – Salary: $6000
Darrell Henderson is being overlooked in redraft fantasy football leagues right now. People are going to learn their lesson when they see the volume he ends up having in week 1.
The running back position averaged 24 total rushing attempts per game for the Rams in 2020. As we move into 2021, the running back depth has completely changed. Cam Akers will miss the season with an Achilles tear and Malcolm Brown is now with the Miami Dolphins. The remaining players in the running back room are Henderson, Xavier Jones and Jake Funk. Both Jones and Funk have yet to have a rushing carry in the NFL.
This leaves a wide open window for Henderson as the workhorse back, even more so in Week 1 as McVay will want to ease in the use of his inexperienced backs. Last season, Henderson was more efficient than Cam Akers, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, while Akers averaged 4.3. He also averaged 4.7 yards per carry when he saw 14 or more rushing attempts. As much as this is a difficult matchup against the Bears run defense, Henderson’s volume will overcome that.
When this offense does get into the red zone, they run the ball at the highest rate in the NFL. 60% of all plays the Rams had in the red zone last season were rushing attempts. The former Memphis back is likely to be the sole benefactor inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. This again goes back to how likely McVay is willing to rely on his inexperienced backups to take the most important carries.
Many people in the OwnersBox Week 1 contest will overlook Henderson for running backs like Najee Harris (vs Buffalo) or Joe Mixon (vs Vikings) because of their opponents. You’ll be able to capitalize on this by taking Henderson for $100 less in salary. He’s going to get a heavy workload and dominate the red zone for the Rams.
